TEACH in Practice

Learning Through Game Development

The main objective of this book is to guide keiki step-by-step in creating their very own Mālama Hanauma Bay game from start to finish. Through the process of game development, keiki are introduced to foundational coding concepts such as motion, sequencing, and loops while using creativity and storytelling to bring their ideas to life. The purpose of the game development experience is two-fold. First, it provides an engaging introduction to coding and computational thinking through hands-on learning. Second, it encourages keiki to deepen their understanding of Hanauma Bay, its marine life, and the importance of mālama ʻāina by embedding educational dialogue and interactions between characters within their games.

A Creative Gateway To Hanauma Bay

More than just a coding activity, we envision this book as a gateway for keiki and their ʻohana to further explore the underwater world of Hanauma Bay and Hawaiʻi’s broader marine ecosystems. By combining storytelling, marine education, and game design, the book empowers keiki to creatively express what they have learned while building a stronger connection to the ocean and the importance of marine conservation.
